Matthew Kowalsky is a PhD student in the Physics department at USC. He graduated with a B.S. in Engineering Physics from the Colorado School of Mines in 2018. One current research project focuses around benchmarking classical and quantum optimizers. Another focuses on the benefits of advanced annealing protocols. In general, Matt is interested in modeling open quantum systems and decoherence, quantum information theory, and quantum algorithms, all as it pertains to realizing a quantum speedup (if possible) on current NISQ-era quantum devices.
